Espolon Tequila Resposada

Espolon ResposadaEspolon Resposada | A Review

What: Tequila Resposada
Rating: Bad Good Exceptional
Distillery: Espolon
Where: Los Altos Mexico
Age: 6 Months
Price / 750: $24.99

Tasters Notes:

Not going to lie. I bought Espolon Tequila Resposada because of the bottle. I was pleasantly surprised by the spirit inside. Complex and tasty.

I really like the look of this tequila. Espolon Tequila Resposada has a beautiful tawny hue and is packaged in an old-timey medicine bottle. The art work is reminecent of  the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) artwork. In the glass Espolon Tequila is slightly oily and leaves nice legs that linger and drip and linger some more. The nose is pleasant and robust with overtures of oak and caramel.  The aroma of roasted agave is prevalent

Absinthe, the Notorious Liquor

AbsintheAbsinthe, the Notorious Liquor

By Robert Scheer

It would be difficult to imagine a more notorious liquor than absinthe. Even though just about everybody has heard of absinthe, a much smaller number know much about it, and even fewer people have given it a try. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to reveal what absinthe really is, along with some of its history as well as its status today.

It is generally agreed that absinthe was first created as a medicinal tonic in the late 1700s in the village of Couvet, Switzerland, but there is a difference of opinion regarding exactly who the creator actually was. The anise-flavored tonic was claimed to have been invented by a French doctor named Pierre Ordinaire, but locals in Couvet said that, long before the appearance of Dr. Ordinaire, the Henriod sisters were doling out absinthe for medicinal purposes.

Regardless of who the originator of the recipe was, it is a fact that the Dubied-Pernod family purchased the recipe from Dr. Ordinaire and set up the first commercial distillery of absinthe in Couvet.

Absolut Citron Vodka

Absolut CitronAbsolut Citron Vodka | A Review

  • What: Flavored Vodka
  • Rating: Bad Good Exceptional
  • Distillery: Absolute
  • Where: Sweden
  • Age: Un-Aged
  • Price / 750: $26.99

Tasters Notes:

So I’m not a Vodka fan, but if I want a nice clean and delicious cocktail I always turn to several premium brands. Absolut is one of those. I like it in a Cosmopolitan, and it’s a necessity for a Llemon Drop. I find that most the products offered by Absolut are clean enough to be sipped.

Absolut Citron, and other Absolut products are made from winter wheat and distilled in a fractional still to remove all traces of fusel alcohols resulting in a clean, smooth product with no detectable off flavors. Absolut Citron is the quintessential ingredient in the Cosmopolitan and also makes a damn fine Bloody Mary. The company is well know because of their aggressive advertising campaigns and their distinctive bottle design.

Smirnoff Whipped Cream Vodka

Smirnoff Whipped Cream Vodka | A ReviewSmirnoff Whipped Cream

What: Flavored Vodka
Rating: Bad Good Exceptional
Distillery: Smirnoff
Where: United Kingdom
Age: Un-Aged
Price / 750: $16.99

Tasters Notes:

Whipped cream vodka, the only serious thing that came to mind when I read that was panty dropper, as serious as that could be. When I bought the stuff I was a little worried I’d have to go buy a pair of size-huge panties so I would have something to drop. But that wasn’t the case. The dude at the Quik-Y-Mart gave me an odd look, but steadied his tongue and only asked if that would be all.

Smirnoff is know for their line of wild and chic-trendy flavored vodkas. Whipped Cream and Marshmallow Fluff are the newest additions. They will come in handy for the holidays, and might just make the mistletoe that much more fun.

Partida Reposado Tequila

Partida Reposada TequilaPartida Reposado Tequila | A Review

What: Rested Tequila
Rating: Bad Good Exceptional
Distillery: Partida
Where: El Cerro, Mexico
Age: 6 Months
Price / 750: $59.99

Tasters Notes:

I don’t have much experience with Partida Reposado. I told Marcus, my bartender at Rockies, I want to try a nice tequila, something I can sip on. He gave me this in a high ball with a tiny splash of water. Said enjoy.

Partida uses only agave grown on their estate in rich volcanic soil. They allow their agave to reach the age of ten before harvest. This allows the plants to develop a deeper, more complex flavor.  After harvest the agave is cooked for 20+ hours and then ferment and distilled in stainless steal column stills. The respado is aged for six months in American Bourbon barrels.
